I attended a 5 day retreat with Adyashanti back in December, 2007, and I prepared the following report immediately afterwards. Reports like these about spiritual teachers and retreats are few and far between on the web, but since I find them to be quite helpful to me personally, I thought I would share my experience with a wider audience.
Purpose of the Retreat
The purpose of the retreat was to deepen one’s experience of Truth, to experience a true opening or moment of pure awareness, and to possibly experience a true awakening. Adyashanti is a big proponent of “awakening in this lifetime, if not now.”

A friend called me yesterday to let me know about all the good things happening over at Oprah.com with regard to Eckhart Tolle’s new book, A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.
I must be the last person to read Eckhart Tolle, although I’ve seen a few of his videos on You Tube. There is a real power in Eckhart’s words and presentation, so I’m diving into both of his books

The timing of Matt’s email couldn’t have been more perfect. I have been thinking a lot about the past, and the above fits well. As this statement aludes to, the past that we remember as occasional thoughts and stories that we tell ourselves and others, does not have a dramatic impact upon our current lives. It is the past that we remember over and over again that influences our present experience.

As I have progressed along my spiritual path, I have felt at times as if I am being led to a better and better understanding of how the spiritual journey works. I started out, only naturally I suppose, wanting primarily to “feel better” both mentally and physically. As time has passed, I have moved a little away from that original goal toward feeling more and more as if I want to be helpful to others. Don’t get me wrong; I have always wanted to help. But the feeling I have now is a bit more selfless, a bit more “other focused” rather than self focused. It is, to say the least, a wonderful feeling.

Every time I travel, I usually meet people from many parts of the U.S. and the world. The conversation moves around the usual topics, and invariably includes the question, “Where are you from?” In response, I usually pause, take a deep breath, and respond, “Springfield, Missouri.” If the person I speaking with is from the U.S., they usually seem to know where Missouri is located, although you can see from the look in their eyes that they have never been there (and have no plans for visiting). If they are from other parts of the wide, wide world, their eyes actually glaze-over as they contemplate their mental map of the world and discover that something called “Missouri” doesn’t exist on it. Adyashanti is a wonderful spiritual teacher from near San Jose, California. He is “an awakening guy” as he likes to say, and his teacher is focused exclusively on spiritual awakening. For my money, he is the real deal.
