Changes Around the Farm

I live on a farm, believe it or not, the one that I grew-up on and the one that my dad grew-up on. My grandparents bought it in 1944, and it has been in the family ever since. No one in the family does any farming these days, certainly not me! My grandfather would laugh out loud if someone suggested that I was a farmer. He was, and so was my dad, but I’ve always been a bit too cosmopolitan for the farming gig. Nonetheless, I love hanging around the old farm.

When I say “changes around the farm,” that’s my way of saying there are some changes happening here on tomstine.com. I’ve been pondering various things for a bit, and recently have been making some changes. As this site is now just over 1 year old (and as yesterday was my birthday, I’m a bit older, too), I’m feeling like heading in a few new directions. So, here are some of the changes and some of the things I’m thinking of doing:

Taking a Break from Coaching

You may have noticed that the link to coaching has disappeared. That’s because I’ve decided to take a break from coaching at the end of this month. From March until at least September, I’m going to be on leave. Why, you ask? Because I’m not really sure where I’m going or what I’m doing with the coaching. Something has quit resonating about it, and so I’m taking some time away to explore it a bit.

Coaching, to me, is mostly about change, improvement, growth, no matter what it is you are focusing upon, whether it be career, personal issues, spirituality, you name it. And that’s the thing: I’m not so sure that change, improvement and growth mean a damn thing! I don’t mean that to sound apathetic; rather, it is a sense that I have that flowing with life is infinitely more important than our feeble attempts at manipulating life.

I am wondering more and more if a coach can teach others how to flow with life. I think it is possible, but I’m really not certain yet how to do so. So much has gone into my own evolution into flowing with life that I’m somewhat stumped as to how I got here. And how I got here may not even be relevant to how someone else will get there. I’ll just have to sit with this one and see what develops.

Saying Goodbye to Comments

I know I’m being a blogging heretic, but I’ve decided to turn off comments on most of my posts. Sacré bleu! I know, comments are one of the pillars of blogging, a way to create community and conversation. Comments that have been posted here have often been fantastic. I have met some fantastic people via comments, and I want to say up front that I value each and every one of you and your contribution. Thank you!

That said, as other bloggers will attest, commenting is a right royal pain in the ass. In many respects, it is a great idea, but in practical terms, it’s often a gigantic time waster. My readership has grown enough that I get lots of comments. While many of them are worth reading, many are not. Don’t worry, if you’ve left a comment, and it has appeared on this site, then you can be sure that I valued it. But I delete a number of comments, some outright spam, others just pure crap. It gets old after a while.

And, I have a funny feeling that it effects my writing. I’ve wondered if I hold back at times to avoid having to read the silly comments I will receive. I know of one blogger that consciously censors her writing to avoid the ridiculous comments she will get. I pretty much say whatever I want, but I wonder if my writing will change a bit with the comments turned off. We shall see.

At times, I will allow comments for a particular post if it is one where I want comments and feedback. At times, I really want my readers’ input, so turning comments on for those posts makes sense.

Furthermore, you can always create a trackback on your blog which I will be more than happy to allow it through if it isn’t spam. To me, that is the best way to create flow and conversation between blogs. If you agree or disagree with something I say, WRITE about it. Don’t have a blog? Wordpress.com or blogger.com will get you started in 5 minutes or less.

More Frequent Posts, Newsletters and Tweets

Quite simply, I want to write more often. I feel like using these posts to take a bit of a look at “me” and how awakening is happening here. I think it would be entertaining for you and possibly even “enlightening.” (Yes, pun intended.) If you are reading what I write, I suspect you must be curious about awakening, or quite likely experiencing some of it yourself. So, I think I’ll get a little more personal about my experience and what is going on within and without.

I Want to Write An Ebook and Create An Online Course

I’ve been threatening to write a book and/or an ebook for a while now. In the next year, I would like to actually do so. We shall see if that happens, but nonetheless, that’s what I would like to do. So, in the next year, maybe you will see something like that.

I also have a strong sense of moving in the direction of creating some sort of course, something educationally oriented for the spiritual seeker. Not sure what, but I can feel that one coming.

Well, that’s all for now. I hope you are having a great weekend! Namaste.

Off to ANOTHER Retreat and Other News

Written on January 29, 2009 by Tom Stine

Howdy Gang!

I’m heading off to California for another 5 day silent retreat with Adyashanti. I’m going less because of Adya and more for the 5 days of SILENCE! It is so nice to give that gift to myself every now and then. Don’t get me wrong, though, I love Adya. He is fun to hang with for 5 days. Maybe I’ll have something to share when I return.

In other news, Tina Su over at Think Simple Now has written a wonderful article entitled How to Get Over Breakups in which she quotes yours truly. The article would have been a good one without my words of wisdom, but with me, well….. Mon Dieu! Fantastique! :-D Seriously give Tina’s article a read. She’s done a very nice job.

Later, gators. See you soon. Namaste.

Deep Appreciation for Recognition

Written on October 28, 2008 by Tom Stine

I’m thrilled to report that I’ve recently gotten a little “love” from some great websites in the past week. First, Dennis Waite at advaita.org.uk has published one of my essays, What Happens When an Awakened One Dies, on his highly respected site on Non-Duality. I’m deeply grateful to Dennis for the honor.

Secondly, Michael Jeffreys has been kind enough (crazy enough?) to quote me on his page of spiritual quotes. Thanks, Michael, I’m honored.

And, as always, I’m grateful to you, my readers, for making this site a lively and fun place to explore the truth together. Namaste.

Home Sweet Home

Written on July 3, 2008 by Tom Stine

I’m home in Missouri after a long day of driving and flying. Sedona is 2 hours north of Phoenix, so a bit of driving was in order before I could catch my flight from Phoenix to Dallas and then to Springfield. Traveling can be exhausting but somehow deeply satisfying.

In the next few days, I plan to post some additional articles on my experience at the Sedona Method Retreat, as well as the 3 Day Level 2 Coaching Training which followed. A great deal arose for me, and I have a number of things to share with you.

But first, I need to rest, get some sleep, buy some groceries and hang-out with my kid. Talk to you soon. Namaste.

Off to Sedona

Written on June 19, 2008 by Tom Stine

I’m sitting at the “luxurious” Springfield-Branson National Airport (what a “national” airport is, I don’t really know) waiting on my delayed flight to Dallas and then on to Phoenix. Hopefully, I will be relaxing in gorgeous Sedona, Arizona by the time the sun goes down. It will be toasty warm in Sedona, 102ºF (39ºC), but dry as a bone. Phoenix is a lung searing 112ºF (44ºC) today. Ouch!

Why am I going to Sedona, you ask? To attend my 7th Sedona Method retreat. This one is 9 days long and supposedly “advanced.” There will be lots of good spiritual inquiry involved, which is always nice. Following this 9 day retreat will be the first “Level 2 Coaching Training” that Hale (Mr. Sedona Method) has offered, which I will of course be attending. It should be both fun and very educational.

My plan is to do frequent reports on my experiences at the retreat, hopefully in the form of short, daily articles. We shall see. But my reports to you will definitely be frequent. The retreat starts Saturday evening, so look for my first report on Sunday.

Be well. More soon. Namaste.

Best Laid Plans and Blog Carnival

Written on May 5, 2008 by Tom Stine

I was going to post a follow-up to the conversation going on at my article Are All Thoughts Untrue? tonight, but the best laid plans of mice and men…. So, I’ll do so tomorrow.

A quick announcement: Anmol Mehta, who publishes a really cool blog on Meditation, Kundalini Yoga and Zen Practice is running a blog carnival. I’m listed, naturally. :-D But there are some very cool articles listed by other writers. Check it out at anmolmehta.com!

Enjoy. Namaste.

Guru Quotes

But beauty, real beauty, ends where intellectual expression begins. Intellect is in itself a mode of exaggeration, and destroys the harmony of a face. The moment one sits down to think, one becomes all nose, or all forehead, or something horrid. Look at the successful men in any of the learned professions. How perfectly hideous they are! Except, of course, in the Church. But then in the Church they don’t think. A bishop keeps on saying at the age of eighty what he was told to say when he was a boy of eighteen, and as a natural consequence he always looks absolutely delightful.

Intelligent practice always deals with just one thing: the fear at the base of human existence, the fear that I am not. And of course I am not, but the last thing I want to know is that.

Q: Since all is pre-ordained, is our self-realization also pre-ordained? Or are we free there at least?

A: Destiny refers only to name and shape. Since you are neither body nor mind, destiny has no control over you. You are completely free. The cup is conditioned by its shape, material, use and so on. But the space within the cup is free. It happens to be in the cup only when viewed in connection with the cup. Otherwise, it is just space. As long as there is a body, you appear to be embodied. Without the body you are not disembodied — you just are.

So the most important thing to realize is this: Your life has an inner purpose and an outer purpose. Inner purpose concerns Being and is primary. Outer purpose concerns doing and is secondary…. Your inner purpose is to awaken. It is as simple as that. You share that purpose with every other person on the planet – because it is the purpose of humanity. Your inner purpose is an essential part of the purpose of the whole, the universe and its emerging intelligence.

Buddhism stands unique in the history of human thought in denying the existence of a Soul, Self or Atman. According to the teachings of the Buddha, the idea of self is an imaginary, false belief which has no corresponding reality, and it produces harmful thoughts of ‘me’ and ‘mine’, selfish desire, craving, attachment, hatred, ill-will, conceit, pride, egoism, and other defilements, impurities and problems. It is the source of all troubles in the world from personal conflicts to wars between nations. In short, to this false view can be traced all the evil in the world.

The disappearance of this fundamental question [How do I know the state of an enlightened one?], on discovering that it had no answer, was a physiological phenomenon, a sudden ‘explosion’ inside, blasting, as it were, every cell, every nerve and every gland in my body. And with that ‘explosion’, the illusion that there is continuity of thought, that there is a center, an ‘I’ linking up the thoughts, was not there anymore.
